Fluid and electrolyte patterns: what am I still missing?

I understand the broad rule for fluid and electrolyte patterns, but I still hesitate when two options seem reasonable. I know I need to focus on what the body is losing, retaining, or unable to regulate and the assessment findings that follow. I also catch myself studying isolated lab values without the organ function or clinical story. Which cue would you use to break the tie?

The most useful starting point is what the body is losing, retaining, or unable to regulate and the assessment findings that follow. If that is not clear, slow down before comparing the answer choices.

I would keep the practice narrow: predict the direction of the change before checking the reference range. That gives you something observable to review after the set.

A common trap is studying isolated lab values without the organ function or clinical story. Naming that pattern before practice can make it easier to catch in the moment.

Try explaining the decision out loud in one sentence. The explanation should connect directly to what the body is losing, retaining, or unable to regulate and the assessment findings that follow.

I would bring this to RN review with one example where the framework worked and one where it still felt ambiguous.
