Therapeutic communication: what am I still missing?

I understand the broad rule for therapeutic communication, but I still hesitate when two options seem reasonable. I know I need to focus on inviting elaboration, reflecting emotion, and avoiding assumptions or false reassurance. I also catch myself choosing a polished response that closes the conversation. Which cue would you use to break the tie?

The most useful starting point is inviting elaboration, reflecting emotion, and avoiding assumptions or false reassurance. If that is not clear, slow down before comparing the answer choices.

I would keep the practice narrow: identify which response keeps the client talking without directing the feeling. That gives you something observable to review after the set.

A common trap is choosing a polished response that closes the conversation. Naming that pattern before practice can make it easier to catch in the moment.

Try explaining the decision out loud in one sentence. The explanation should connect directly to inviting elaboration, reflecting emotion, and avoiding assumptions or false reassurance.

I would bring this to RN review with one example where the framework worked and one where it still felt ambiguous.

The plan sounds sustainable. Recheck it after several sets and look for whether choosing a polished response that closes the conversation is happening less often.
